These Incidents Keep Happening

Recently, a car slammed into a man on Northern Boulevard, an area that has seen its fair share of pedestrian crashes. The victim in this case, a man believed to be in his 30s, was struck in the middle of the block near 87th Street.

Police say that the victim was stepping off of a pedestrian medial in the middle of the four-lane boulevard when he was struck. The motorist remained on scene and no charges were filed. The pedestrian sustained a severe head injury and was listed in critical condition at the hospital.

This incident comes on the heels of the city’s acknowledgment that there are serious traffic safety issues on this corridor. Residents here have begun to call it the “Boulevard of Death” due to an increase in pedestrian deaths.
City officials hope to recreate this section of the city with the Vision Zero goals in mind, a nationwide effort to curb pedestrian injuries and deaths in crowded corridors.

For the latest reporting year in New York, there were 15,239 pedestrian crashes. Out of those, 249 were fatal crashes and there were 14,912 personal injury crashes.

Look at those numbers again and you will see that nearly every pedestrian crash resulted in a fatality or injury. It is not uncommon for us to see the following as a result of a pedestrian crash:

  • Spinal cord trauma (possible paralysis)
  • Head injuries/traumatic brain injuries
  • Internal organ damage or internal bleeding
  • Broken or dislocated bones
  • Severe lacerations or road rash

We often find that these incidents happen in areas where the pedestrian has the right-of-way. Negligent and careless drivers (those impaired, distracted, or speeding) are commonly at fault.
