In the wake of a high-profile deadly demolition accident, the mayor of Philadelphia is preparing the city to implement sweeping changes to the regulations of building demolition. In addition to the regulatory changes, according to the mayor, every currently active demolition site will be inspected for safety.
The event that precipitated the regulatory changes was the collapse of a four-story building on a neighboring Salvation Army store, killing six people and injuring thirteen more. The contractor responsible for the demolition is being sued for this construction accident. The mayor stated that he has no current information regarding the crane operator who was on the job when the building collapsed or about what occurred before the incident. The city will be conducting a thorough investigation of the collapse.
